Skydiving is on the bucket list item for many people. For some, it’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience, but for others, it becomes a hobby and a challenging sport.
If you’ve been thinking of skydiving in Jacksonville, there’s no better time than now. With Jacksonville’s year-round temperate weather and beautiful scenery, it’s the perfect spot to do your first tandem skydive or your tenth!
The Feeling of Flying
Jumping out of a plane is like no other experience on earth. There’s a thrill that bubbles up in your throat and the world seems to quiet as it rushes around you. The wind in your face, the feeling of movement in the sky—it’s the stuff of dreams! Freefall feels less like falling and more like flying. Your tandem instructor, a highly experienced licensed skydiver that you will be strapped to through your skydive, has the skill to move you through the air in a series of controlled movements using his arms and legs—something you could learn to do as well if you obtained your skydiving license!
There is an innate desire to fly in all of us. It has guided historical figures like the Wright Brothers and mythological figures like Icarus. Man was born to soar through the sky and you can do so without wings while skydiving!
At World Skydiving Center, we use only new, modern, top-of-the-line gear. Gear safety is one of the most important aspects of skydiving and we take it very seriously. Reserves are repacked every 180 days whether it gets used or not! We have packers that are specially trained by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) who pack the reserves.
In addition, World Skydiving Center’s planes see regularly scheduled maintenance and are always kept in tip-top shape!
Florida’s Homegrown Sport
Skydiving is a Floridian sport. The sport was birthed in Florida and some of the best skydiving gear manufacturers in the world are just down the street from Jacksonville. Many of skydiving’s greatest leaders and innovators call their home, Florida. With Florida’s year-round temperate climate, flat-land, and steady winds, it has become a skydiving haven for many.
I’m afraid of heights!
We hear this a lot, but the truth is most first-time skydivers feel much more secure after we take them through tandem training. The fear of heights, while very real on the ground, tends to disappear once we are above the clouds. Out of all of our customers who have said they are afraid of heights, not one has ever landed from their tandem skydiving experience and not enjoyed the experience!
Will I get sick to my stomach?
Even if you tend to get motion sickness, it won’t affect you while in freefall. Because unlike a roller coaster, in freefall you are going with gravity, not against it. Under canopy, simply tell your instructor to take it easy on the turns, and he’ll give you a nice, gentle ride back to the ground.
Is skydiving safe?
Skydiving is considered an extreme sport, but it is safer than driving in traffic or riding on a motorcycle. Every skydiver flies with two canopies in their rig, one main parachute and one reserve. In addition, all tandem rigs at World Skydiving Center are outfitted with an Automated Activation Device (AAD) that automatically deploys the parachute at a safe height from the ground should it not already be deployed.
