JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (March 30, 2011) – The annual Jacksonville Jazz Festival, held May 26-29, is one of Northeast Florida’s signature events, generating excitement from visitors all over the country. Natalie Cole, Herbie Hancock and Eddie Palmieri are the scheduled headliners for the 2011 music festival in Downtown Jacksonville. The majority of events during the four-day festival are free.
A roster of the genre’s best musicians are scheduled during the celebration on four main stages stretching from The Jacksonville Landing to Hemming Plaza in the heart of the urban core. The festival begins on Thursday evening where the stars of tomorrow compete in the Generation Next Youth Talent Competition. The music and celebration continues into the weekend.
There’s something for everyone – families, couples and jazz enthusiasts – at the event. In addition to grooving to the music, other activities take place throughout the weekend including movie screenings, a symphony instrument petting zoo for children to get up close and personal with the music and a jazz parade. Ticketed events include ‘Round Midnight Jazz Jams, Wine Down Wine Tasting and the Sunday jazz brunch. The signature juried art show, Art in the Heart Downtown, will also be coinciding with the festival.
Jacksonville hotels deals and packages are available on the Downtown riverfront area where the festival takes place. Nearby activities occurring during the weekend include The Riverside Arts Market, Florida’s largest, free weekly arts festival held on Saturdays or the Museum of Science & History (MOSH) is hosting Cosmic Concerts, late-night planetarium shows with incredible rock music paired with a laser show. Or head out to the ballgame as the back-to-back Southern League Championship team Jacksonville Suns take on the Carolina Mudcats. The Double-A affiliate of the Florida Marlins plays at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville on May 30 and 31.
There’s more to explore when heading to Jacksonville’s 21 miles of beaches, with diverse activities, restaurants, nightlife hotspots, souvenir shops and oceanfront hotels blending into the scene without crowding views of the shoreline.
Take in the breathtaking views of the shoreline on the Jacksonville Beach Fishing Pier, extending nearly a quarter of a mile into the Atlantic Ocean or sunbathe along the white, sandy beaches and Atlantic Ocean. Visitors looking for a low-key activity in the evening should grab a blanket or beach chairs and head to the Sea Walk Pavilion in Jacksonville Beach for Moonlight Movies on May 27. A free movie is screened outdoors under the stars.
