Visions of Sunshine, Beaches and Warm Weather to Lure Snowbound New Yorkers in 15 Second Commercial

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (Feb. 7, 2011) – In the midst of one of the snowiest winters on record for the Northeast United States, Visit Jacksonville launched an advertising campaign positioning the city as an escape from the cold in New York’s Times Square Plaza. The 15-second advertisement will be on display daily every hour on the CBS “Super Screen” located at 42nd Street between 7th and 8th Avenues through April 30.

Featuring Jacksonville’s warm weather, sunshine and beaches, the advertisement is a stark contrast to the snowy conditions currently in New York. The spot is a part of Visit Jacksonville’s recent advertising campaign, Immerse Yourself Here, and serves as a call to action and an invitation to get away and relax in Jacksonville.

The advertisement was made possible through additional funds granted to Visit Jacksonville for marketing and advertising from the Duval County Tourist Development Council (TDC). With fewer promotional dollars due to the economy and an increased need for branding and awareness to the city, the TDC voted for a 5 percent increase to the Visit Jacksonville budget for this fiscal year.

“New York has always been an emerging tourism market for Jacksonville in the past and this provided a chance to tempt and grow the demand from weather-worn consumers who have said ‘enough is enough’ when it comes to the snow,” said Mya Surrency, senior director of marketing for Visit Jacksonville. “It was an opportunity where our message coincided with the conditions that Mother Nature has presented.”

Times Square Plaza – “The Gateway to New York” – is estimated to have in excess of 1.5 million impressions daily.
