May 1, 1562, is a date many residents of Jacksonville aren’t familiar with. On that historic day in Jean Ribault sailed into what we now call the St. Johns River, and named it The River of May, which is still referenced today in the name Mayport. Ribault claimed the new found land for France by placing a stone on the ground in her honor, starting French history in Jacksonville. When Ribault returned in 1564, Fort Caroline, formerly named la Caroline, was built and the “First Thanksgiving” took place on June 30 of 1564 in Jacksonville, Florida. (sorry, Plymouth, they ate here first 57 years earlier!)

We know that Jacksonville still remains a relatively untold story to a large segment of consumers who recognize the City for the Jaguars. We also know that we lose many leisure visitors and meeting and conventions because the consumer doesn’t know what there is to do here.
