Jessica Akel
Hi! I’m Jessica Akel — a local content creator, salon owner (Luna Shears located in Riverside), and your go-to gal for all things Jax 🌴
I’m passionate about spotlighting the small businesses, food spots, and hidden gems that make Jacksonville shine. From beach days to brunch, I love sharing authentic moments and must-do experiences in the 904. Let’s explore this vibrant city together! 🐅
1. What do you love most about Jacksonville?
What I love most about Jacksonville is how it feels like a big city with a small-town soul. There’s a deep sense of community here — where locals support locals and there’s always something new to discover, whether it’s a waterfront view, a pop-up market, or a killer cup of coffee. ☕🌊🌞
2. What is one thing you tell a visitor they must see/do when in Jax?
You truly can’t visit Jacksonville without experiencing our beaches — whether it’s sunrise on the sand, a walk along the shore, or grabbing tacos after a beach day. 🌊☀️ But I always recommend doing more than just the beach. Explore our local markets like Riverside Arts Market or the Jax Beach Brunch Market for amazing food, handmade goods, and live music. 🎶🛍️
For art and culture lovers, the Cummer Museum and MOCA are beautiful stops with inspiring exhibits and local history. 🎨 And if you love the outdoors, spend time kayaking, paddle boarding, or walking our scenic parks and trails — the outdoor experiences in Jax are unmatched. You’ll fall in love with the mix of nature, art, and coastal vibes that make this city so special. 🌿🌇
3. Where is your favorite local spot to eat?
I always find this question hard to answer because there are so many amazing local restaurants I love in Jacksonville! When people ask, I usually respond with, "It depends on what type of cuisine you're craving."😋
My forever favorite lunch spot will always be Gina’s Deli, our family business that’s been serving the Murray Hill community since 1995. It’s more than just a deli; it’s where I learned what it means to work hard, to care deeply, and to take pride in feeding people well. I grew up behind that counter, watching my family pour love into every sandwich, salad, and smile that walked through the door. There’s something so special about seeing regulars who’ve been coming in for decades, now bringing their kids or grandkids. Gina’s Deli isn’t just our business, it’s part of the neighborhood’s heartbeat.🥙🍔🥗
But if I had to choose a favorite dinner spot right now, it would be Othello, located in the Springfield neighborhood. It makes me feel closer to home and to where my family is from, Palestine. The flavors are authentic, the energy is warm, and every dish is filled with soul. It's more than a restaurant — it's an experience that connects me to my roots. ✨🇵🇸
