Ebenezer Methodist Church
Founded in 1864 as Zion Methodist Episcopal Church, Ebenezer Methodist Church began with 28 African-American members under Rev. John S. Swain. Guided by early pastors, the congregation purchased land at Clay and Ashley Streets and built its first house of worship.
In 1881, the congregation dedicated a new edifice, celebrating with prayer, a Love-Feast, and the hymn “Come Thou Fount,” led by Mrs. Olivia White-Smith proclaiming, “Here I’ll raise mine Ebenezer.” This moment marked the church as a spiritual stronghold and community beacon.
Through the 20th century, Ebenezer nurtured faith and service under pastors such as Rev. Brown, Rev. Hurley, and Rev. Harris. Relocated to 9114 Norfolk Boulevard in 1970, Ebenezer grew into “A Fellowship of Love,” known for outreach, mission, and enduring faith. Today, as Jacksonville’s first organized African-American United Methodist congregation, Ebenezer stands as a testament to resilience, devotion, and a legacy that continues under Rev. Mary Jackson, M.Div.
