Yellow Bluff Fort Historic State Park
Strategically located near the mouth of the St. Johns River, Yellow Bluff played a key role as a military encampment during the Civil War. Though never home to a formal fort, the site was fortified with large cannons and earthworks to guard access to Florida’s inland waterways along the east coast.
Construction of the encampment began in 1862, and at various times it was occupied by both Confederate and Union forces. At its peak, the site supported more than 250 soldiers. Its distinctive T-shaped earthworks span approximately 1.3 acres and remain visible today as a testament to its historical significance.
The park is situated on the Yellow Bluff peninsula, on the north side of the St. Johns River, off New Berlin Road. Today, visitors can explore the preserved site, walk shaded trails, and imagine the strategic importance of this once-bustling military outpost.
