Breaking Ground: Beyond Bathing Beauties

Location: Beaches Museum

In a continued celebration of the 100th anniversary of the passage of the 19th amendment, Beaches Museum is proud to present our new history exhibit: Breaking Ground: Beyond Bathing Beauties.
The popular image of beach women as bathing beauties only hints at the diverse lives of women at the beaches. From the first settlers to women of today, this exhibit provides the opportunity to explore the many dynamic roles of women as proprietors, laundresses, civic leaders and more.

The beaches were a rare opportunity for women to have careers, shape society and break boundaries. Join us in celebrating the women that shaped our community.
Two companion events are planned with this exhibit. The first, on November 15, is a Cemetery Tour exploring the H. Warren Smith Cemetery with history detective Johnny Woodhouse as he discusses the well-known women interred in the cemetery. The second, which will take place on January 30, will be a Story Tellers event with the groundbreaking female mayors of the Beaches, past and present. The Mayors will discuss their service to the community and the stories behind their motivation to run for office. Learn what it takes to not only survive, but thrive as a female leader at the Beaches.

Breaking Ground: Beyond Bathing Beauties is sponsored by Florida Women’s Law Group, the Rotary Club of Ponte Vedra and Chao Framing.

PROJECT ATRIUM: CARL JOE WILLIAMS

Location: Museum of Contemporary Art Jacksonville

In Making Great Lives Matter, Carl Joe Williams, a New Orleans- based multimedia artist, presents a large-scale project that considers the idea of the American Dream. In the Atrium, Williams' signature vibrant and rhythmic geometric patterns, inspired by African American quilt patterns and ancient sacred geometry, cover the 40ft high Atrium walls. Embedded throughout are objects and power symbols, including Adinkra symbols from West Africa; the American flag, and Confederate flag; as well as ancient symbols adopted by supremacist groups in the 20th century; all woven together to form a historical backdrop for the televisions and video monitors in the lower tiers.

The televisions feature harrowing newsreel footage of injustice, including the death of George Floyd that shook the country in May of 2020. The lower tier of videos features members of the Jacksonville community providing answers to a series of questions posed by the artist that explore their own perspectives on the American Dream.

Just sit back and enjoy your time learning about these wonderful areas of our city, while riding in our luxury tuk tuks.

Earthquake

Location: The Comedy Zone

If the key to success in Hollywood is longevity and all the Hollywood players get their ever so anticipated 15 minutes of fame, then Comedian Earthquake has to have somehow lucked up on an hour.

‘Quake’s’ story is unique however. The former enlisted sergeant for the U.S. Air Force and father of three, never had a plan prior to this. In fact, this may not have even been a plan in the first place. A chance performance at a local talent show on base tipped the hat on what would become one of the most successful runs in stand-up comedy in past decades. After becoming a formidable talent of the mid-90’s explosion of televised urban comedy programming in the form of BET’s ComicView and HBO’s Def Comedy Jam, Quake set up shop in New Aged Black Hollywood known as Atlanta and held down the host spot as proprietor of Uptown Comedy Corner. This infamous stage launched his as well as other’s national star status playing sold out rooms and making the most of the would-be historical moment of urban comedy’s peak in mainstream media.

Earthquake has solidified a significant following from coast to coast via TV appearances and sold-out concert dates. He was in “Everybody Hates Chris,” “Clerk’s II,” “Def Comedy,” “One Night Stand,” and “Comedy Central Presents Earthquake.”

Presently Comedian Earthquake is preparing to shoot his forthcoming special and maintaining his place as ‘the comedian’s favorite comedian’ and now a renowned fan favorite on the comedy circuit nationwide.

Breaking Ground: Beyond Bathing Beauties

In a continued celebration of the 100th anniversary of the passage of the 19th amendment, Beaches Museum is proud to present our new history exhibit: Breaking Ground: Beyond Bathing Beauties.
The popular image of beach women as bathing beauties only hints at the diverse lives of women at the beaches. From the first settlers to women of today, this exhibit provides the opportunity to explore the many dynamic roles of women as proprietors, laundresses, civic leaders and more.

The Circle and the Square - MOCA

Location: Museum of Contemporary Art Jacksonville

Geometry and art have always been intimately connected since ancient times, from Da Vinci's use of the Rule of Thirds and the Golden Ratio, or Cezanne's famous quote “Treat nature by means of the cylinder, the sphere, and the cone”; to modern art's use of the Fibonacci spiral and other geometric principles in order to create aesthetics and visual harmony.

This exhibition explores the use of geometry and mathematical concepts in contemporary art, through works in the MOCA collection, complemented by loans from local private collections.
