Historic Richmond Hotel
First published in 1936 by Victor Green, the “Negro Motorist Green Book” was an essential travel guide that listed safe restaurants, hotels, gas stations and services for Blacks navigating segregation-era America. Jacksonville’s LaVilla neighborhood was a key destination featured in the guide, including the Richmond Hotel, built in 1909 and owned by Alice Kilpatrick. It served Black travelers with 48 rooms and a 65-seat restaurant, making it one of Jacksonville’s premier Green Book accommodations.
