The Black Church
The Black church has long been the cornerstone of LaVilla's community, fostering education, culture and civil rights leadership. Its congregations helped establish institutions such as Edward Waters University, Brewster Hospital and Afro-American Life Insurance Company. Several of LaVilla's historic churches were designed and built by pioneering Black architect and contractor James Edward Hutchins.
