Union Occupation
During the Civil War, LaVilla was the site of Union fortifications built by some of the first Black regiments in the U.S. Army. Harriet Tubman served as a Union scout and spy during the 1863 occupation of Jacksonville, while Susie King Taylor, the Civil War's first Black Army nurse, provided care and taught soldiers to read and write. Veterans of these United States Colored Troops later became among LaVilla's earliest settlers, helping shape the community's enduring legacy.
