The band was formed by Cedric Bixler-Zavala (vocalist) and Omar Rodríguez-López (guitarist), who were former members of the post-hardcore band At The Drive-In. The Mars Volta was one of the most influential groups of the 2000s, with their unique blend of progressive rock and Latin influences. They are often cited as one of the most important bands of the post-hardcore era and have inspired many bands that followed them.
